Have you ever seen a mussel so big? We are constantly inspired by the delicious food in Africa that often goes unrecognized elsewhere in the world. This beauty was one of many served up at La Maree Restaurant on the extreme western point of Africa – Les Almadies neighborhood in Dakar, Senegal. Right on the water, they specialize in shellfish. But there are plenty of great restaurant options nearby in Les Almadies – Pieds dans L’Eau is another favorite. And a unique experience is the little beach near the Soumbedioune Market. There you can choose fresh fish right off the boat to be grilled. Don’t expect anything elaborate – plastic tables on the beach (literally on the sand) with a big flood light. But it is a great spot to enjoy the simple goodness of the food, often accompanied by some musicians coming to play. Based on the few empty tables we have seen, we are not the only ones to enjoy it!
